"Worms" leverage the combination of software monocultures and the uncontrolled Internet communication model to quickly compromise large numbers of hosts. Current operational practices have not been able to manage these threats effectively and the research community is only now beginning to address this area. We are soliciting papers from researchers and practitioners on subjects relevant to an understanding of the threat posed by worms, and defensive postures and countermeasures that can be used to mitigate the threat. ____________________________________________________________ *NEW THIS MONTH! The goal of the workshop is to promote community-wide discussion of ideas that will influence and foster continued research in the field. The workshop will provide a venue for researchers to present new ideas that have the potential to significantly impact the community in the long term, especially those that are architectural or design-oriented in nature. ____________________________________________________________ *NEW THIS MONTH! Title: Second Symposium on Networked Systems Design and Implementation (NSDI '05) Abstract: 08-Oct-2004 Deadline: 15-Oct-2004 Webpage: http://www.usenix.org/events/nsdi05/ Conference: May 2-4, 2005 Synopsis: The NSDI conference focuses on the design principles of large-scale networks and distributed systems. Systems as diverse as Internet routing, peer-to-peer file sharing, sensor nets, scalable Web services, and distributed network measurement share a set of challenges. Progress in any of these areas requires an understanding of how researchers are addressing the challenges of large-scale systems in other contexts. Our goal is to bring together researchers from across the networking and systems community -- including computer networking, distributed systems, and operating systems -- to foster cross-disciplinary approaches and to address shared research challenges. ____________________________________________________________ Special Announcements Title: ACM/SIGOPS Mark Weiser Award Summary: CALL FOR NOMINATIONS The Mark Weiser Award was created in 2001 by ACM SIGOPS, to be given to an individual who has demonstrated creativity and innovation in operating systems research. The recipient must have begun his or her career no earlier than 20 years prior to nomination. The award is named in honor of Mark Weiser, a computing visionary recognized for his research accomplishments during his career at Xerox PARC. ACM SIGOPS will present a $1000 prize to the recipient, in memory of Mark and his many contributions to SIGOPS and the operating systems community. The award will be given annually at SOSP and OSDI. The selection committee will choose the recipient based on: "contributions that are highly creative, innovative, and possibly high-risk, in keeping with the visionary spirit of Mark Weiser." Nominations are due September 1, 2004.
