Announcements ---------------- Title: SIGMETRICS 2001 / Performance 2001 Joint Intl. Conference on Measurement & Modeling of Computer Systems Deadline: 26 October 2000 Conference: June 17-20th, 2001 Web page: http://www.cs.umd.edu/conference/sigmetrics2001 Synopsis: The joint SIGMETRICS/Performance conference solicits papers (and proposals for tutorials and hot topics) on the development and application of state-of-the-art, broadly-applicable analytic, simulation, and measurement-based performance evaluation techniques. Of particular interest is work that furthers the state-of-the-art in performance evaluation methods, or those that creatively apply previously developed methods to understand or to gain important insights into key design trade-offs in complex computer/communication systems. Title: DIStributed Computing (DISC 2000) Symposium: 4-6 October 2000 Place: Toledo (Spain) Web page: www.DISC2000.org Synopsis: One of the two leading annual technical meetings in the theory of distributed computing and algorithms. Special announcement: _Computing_Reviews_ reviewers needed Reviewers are urgently needed to write reviews of computing literature for Computing Reviews, the Association for Computing Machinery's review journal covering computing literature from around the world. ACM is expanding the scope of CR in preparation for launching an online version. At the same time, a number of long-time reviewers have retired, and there is a critical need for people who are qualified to review articles and books in the computing field. If you are interested in seeing your reviews in print (and online), please go to ACM's Web application form at http://www.acm.org/reviews. In addition, please tell any of your colleagues you think might be interested and direct them to this URL. Carol Wierzbicki Executive Editor, Computing Reviews wierzbicki@acm.org 2. Sites-of-the-month --------------------- Please contribute. The sites-of-the-month list in the SIGOPS-ANNOUNCE monthly posting features web sites that OS researchers and practitioners may find useful. This list depends on contributions from members: if you know of a site you think other members should know about, please nominate it by following the instructions at http://www.acm.org/sigops/SOTM/ This month's sites: Title: Risks Forum URL: news:comp.risks URL: http://www.csl.sri.com/risks.html Summary: Cautionary tales of computer system design moderated by Peter G. Neumann. I hope that every programmer who is involved in building the cars I drive, the banks I frequent, and the software I run is a regular reader. Title: In Pursuit of Simplicity: the manuscripts of Edsger W. Dijkstra URL: http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/EWD/ Summary: From the forward: Although most of Edsger's publications began life as EWD manuscripts, the great majority of his manuscripts remain unpublished. They have been inaccessible to many potential readers, and those who have received copies have been unable to cite them in their own work. To alleviate both of these problems, the department has collected over a thousand of the manuscripts in this permanent web site...We hope you will find it convenient, useful, inspiring, and enjoyable. Previous months' sites are listed at http://www.acm.org/sigops/SOTM/ 3. About the SIGOPS-ANNOUNCE mailing list ----------------------------------------- The SIGOPS-ANNOUNCE mailing list is intended to provide a low-volume channel that provides operating systems researchers and practitioners with information about upcoming events or other important announcements. In general, a message containing a group of such announcements will be sent about once per month with the subject line "SIGOPS-ANNOUNCE monthly posting". On rare occasions, announcements of particular interest or urgency will be sent out with a different subject line, still starting with "SIGOPS-ANNOUNCE" (for readers who wish to use mail filtering programs.) To subscribe, send mail to LISTSERV@ACM.ORG with the following command (paste it!) in the body of the message: SUBSCRIBE SIGOPS-ANNOUNCE To unsubscribe, send mail to LISTSERV@ACM.ORG with the following command in the body of the message: UNSUBSCRIBE SIGOPS-ANNOUNCE To get more information about manipulating your subscription to this list, go to http://www.acm.org/infodir/services/listserv/doc.html To contact the owner of the list or to report a problem with the list, email SIGOPS-ANNOUNCE-request@ACM.ORG To request that an announcement be included in these mailings, email infodir_SIGOPS@acm.org. -Mike Dahlin
