SOSP 1999 Student Travel Grants |
|
The ACM Special Interest Group on Operating Systems (SIGOPS),
with support from corporate contributors, will be offering a limited number
of scholarships to enable students to attend its flagship conference, the
ACM Symposium on Operating Systems Principles (SOSP).
A typical scholarship will cover the SOSP conference fee (which includes
double-occupancy hotel room and all meals during the conference, attendance
at all conference events, and a copy of the proceedings). Additional funding
may be awarded toward the cost of travel.
Applications are to be written in English. To apply you should submit
the following:
-
A cover letter indicating the amount of support required. The cost should include an informal quote for
the airfare from the departure city to Charleston, SC (CHS airport code),
assuming a Saturday-night stay, and include the cost ($75) of one extra
night's stay at Kiawah (Saturday).
-
A letter of recommendation from the student's advisor,
supporting the application, which must cover the technical merit of the
student's participation.
-
A short position paper written by the student explaining what benefit
is expected from attending the conference and why the scholarship should
be granted. The statement should describe any research the student has
been doing and list any papers that have been published. It should be no
longer than three pages. Student authors who will be presenting and accepted
papers do not need to submit a technical statement.
Additionally:
-
Applicants for scholarships should not register for SOSP until after they hear from the scholarship
committee. The registration form will have a way to indicate that your
registration fee is paid by the scholarship.
-
Members of under-represented groups are particularly
encouraged to apply.
-
Funding is available to all students at educational
institutions, world-wide.
-
Although most applicants are likely to be graduate
students, undergraduates who are actively involved in systems research
projects are also welcome to apply.
-
Students may be particularly interested in participating in the
Work-in-Progress
and Poster Session (details to be announced).
-
Students receiving scholarships agree to be a session
scribe (if required) during the conference.
-
Following the conference, funds will be paid after travel receipts and
a session summary report have been filed with the Selection Committee Chair.
The deadline for receipt of applications for student scholarships is September
14, 1999. Notifications will sent out via e-mail by September 30,
1999.
Applications will be reviewed by a five-member Selection Committee.
Send applications to the Chair of this Selection Committee:
Guerney D. H. Hunt

P. O. Box 704
Yorktown Heights, NY 10598-0704

Applications will also be accepted by electronic mail (ASCII,
HTML, PostScript or pdf format) or FAX. E-mail should be addressed
to gdhh@watson.ibm.com,
with a subject of "SOSP Scholarship Application: XXX", where XXX is replaced
by the name of the applicant. FAXes should have a cover page with similar
information and use the following number +1 (914) 784-7455 (United States).
E-mail (, letters, or FAXes) from the student's advisor should be sent
directly to the committee and not via the student applicant.
