Synopsis:
PPoPP is a forum for leading work on all aspects of parallel programming, including foundational results, techniques, tools, and practical experience. In the context of the symposium, "parallel programming" is construed to encompass work on concurrent, multithreaded, distributed programming for multicores, accelerators, multiprocessors, and tightly-clustered systems. Given the rise of multicore processors, PPoPP is particularly interested in work that seeks to transition parallel programming into the computing mainstream. Papers should report on original research relevant to parallel programming, and should contain enough background material to make them accessible to the entire parallel programming research community. XtreemOS is a Linux-based operating systems that includes Grid functionalities. It is characterised by properties such as transparency, hiding the complexity of in the underlying distributed infrastructure; scalability, supporting hundreds of thousands of nodes and millions of users; and dependability, providing reliability, highly availability and security. The XtreemOS Summer School will include lectures on modern distributed paradigms such as Grid computing, Cloud computing, and network-centric operating systems. The Summer School will combine lectures from research leaders shaping the future of distributed systems and world leaders in deploying and exploiting distributed infrastructures. Hands-on laboratory exercises and practical sessions using XtreemOS will give participants experience on using modern distributed systems.

Synopsis:
Software must be upgraded regularly to incorporate bug fixes and security patches or to keep up with the evolving requirements. Recent studies and a large body of anecdotal evidence suggest that, in practice, upgrades are expensive and failure-prone. HotSWUp is an interdisciplinary workshop, based on synergies among the areas of programming languages, software engineering and systems. By seeking contributions from both academic researchers and industry practitioners, HotSWUp aims to combine novel ideas with experience from upgrading real systems. The workshop builds on the success of HotSWUp'08, where the paper presentations and lively discussions attracted a diverse audience of researchers.
