Announcements

Dennis M. RItchie Award

Synopsis:

The Dennis M. Ritchie Doctoral Dissertation Award recognizes research in software systems. The award aims to encourage the creativity that Dennis Ritchie embodied. It is awarded each year at SOSP. Details on the nomination process can be found at the webpage.

The Hall of Fame Award

Synopsis:

The SIGOPS Hall of Fame Award recognizes the most influential Operating Systems papers that were published at least ten years in the past. The selection is based upon a discussion that considers the impact that papers have had on the field of operating systems research. Award winners will be announced at the upcoming SOSP.

APSys 2026 Call for Posters

Synopsis:

APSys 2026 is calling for posters that present innovative research across all areas of computer systems. Posters will be presented during the workshop's poster session, highlighting new or ongoing research, and giving authors the opportunity to interact directly with workshop participants. The organizers highly encourage submissions of controversial works, crazy ideas, and thought-provoking, innovative perspectives on designing and implementing novel computer systems. Early-stage work is also welcome. See the webpage for additional details

The Distinguished Service Award

Synopsis:

The ACM SIGOPS Distinguished Service Award recognizes individuals who have made exceptional, sustained contributions to the systems research community through service, leadership, and mentorship within the SIGOPS ecosystem. This award honors those whose efforts have significantly advanced the field of operating systems and related areas by fostering collaboration, inclusivity, and professional growth. The award will be given and presented at the upcoming SOSP; see the website for details on the nomination process.

The Rising Star Award

Synopsis:

The ACM SIGOPS Rising Star Award recognizes early-career researchers who have made significant contributions to the field of operating systems within ten years of earning their Ph.D. This award fills a critical gap in ACM’s recognition structure, as existing awards (e.g., the ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award, SIGOPS Dennis M. Ritchie Doctoral Dissertation Award, or SIGOPS Mark Weiser Award) primarily honor dissertation work or long-term impact. The award will be presented at SOSP. See the webpage for additional details on the nomination process.

Soliciting sites for the 33rd ACM SOSP (SOSP 2028)

Synopsis:

We are looking for possible sites to host the 33th ACM Symposium on Operating Systems Principles (SOSP 2028). The now annual SOSP conference is the world’s premier forum for researchers, developers, programmers, and teachers of computer systems technology. At every SOSP, academic and industrial participants present research and experience papers that cover the full range of computer systems software, and celebrate the progress systems community has made. Recent SOSPs have been (will be) held at Vancouver, Canada (SOSP 2027), Prague, Czechia (SOSP 2026), Seoul, South Korea (SOSP 2025), Austin, Texas, USA (SOSP, 2024) Koblenz, Germany (SOSP 2023), Virtual (SOSP 2021), Huntsville, Canada (SOSP 2019), Shanghai, China (SOSP 2017), Monterey, USA (SOSP 2015), Farmington, USA (SOSP 2013), and Cascais, Portugal (SOSP 2011). We now solicit short one-page proposals from those interested in hosting SOSP 2027, preferably in the Asia-pacific region according to the preferred venue rotation convention of SOSP. Please let us know about the following in your proposal. 1. Where is it located and how will people get there? How close is it to the nearest airport? 2. How many people can the site house in hotel rooms, etc.? Would people stay in one place, at multiple hotels near the site, or other options? 3. Does it have meeting space sufficient for our needs, such as a single room for 600 --- 700 people with good A/V capabilities, lunch rooms, smaller meeting rooms for workshops? 4. Who will be managing local arrangements for the conference if it is to be held there? 5. Is there good food and wine available? Is it surrounded by beautiful scenery that will inspire the next batch of SIGOPS Hall of Fame papers 🙂 6. Are you available to present your proposal at the SIGOPS business meeting in SOSP 2026? Please send your proposals or questions to acmsigops@gmail.com before August. 31st, 2026. We will contact you soon after receiving your proposal.

Mark Weiser Award

Synopsis:

The Mark Weiser Award is given to an individual who has demonstrated creativity and innovation in operating systems research, broadly construed. The award is named in honor of Mark Weiser, a computing visionary recognized for his research accomplishments during his career at Xerox PARC. The recipient must have begun his or her career no earlier than 20 years prior to nomination. The award will be presented at the upcoming SOSP. Additional details about the nomination process can be found on the webpage.

About this list

About SIGOPS-ANNOUNCE

The SIGOPS-ANNOUNCE mailing list is intended to provide a low-volume channel that provides operating systems researchers and practitioners with information about upcoming events or other important announcements. In general, a message containing a group of such announcements will be sent about once per month with the subject line "SIGOPS-ANNOUNCE monthly posting". On rare occasions, announcements of particular interest or urgency will be sent out with a different subject line, starting with "SIGOPS-ANNOUNCE supplemental posting" (for readers who wish to use mail filtering programs.) Finally, this mailing list is made available for use by publicity chairs of SIGOPS-sponsored conferences and the SIGOPS officers.
